When Politics Outweigh Lives

JERUSALEM - The mayor of Sderot, a small town in Israel that has borne the brunt of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, announced Wednesday that he is stepping down, saying the situation there is "impossible."

Eli Moyal said he hoped his resignation would spur authorities to move against the Hamas militants who overran Gaza six months ago, defeating forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Sderot, a working-class town of 22,000 a mile from the Gaza Strip, has been battered by more than 4,500 rockets launched by Palestinians since 2001.

"The situation in Sderot is impossible," Moyal said on Israel Radio. "I am resigning immediately as the mayor of Sderot. Maybe this will spark the government to launch an operation for the lives of its residents."

The last line in the article:

The Israeli government has pledged to better fortify Sderot's homes, schools and public buildings.

This is sort of like locking the hen house after the fox has killed the chickens. Rather than cracking down on Islamic terrorists and stopping the barrage of missiles, politically correct Israeli bureaucracy would like to make the rocket attacks more tolerable for the residents. What next? Maybe Olmert should just disarm the Jews and have them all slaughtered to save the Islamic terrorists the trouble.
