Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's son is slated to replace his mother as co-chair of Pakistan People's Party (PPP):

Bilawal, a 19-year-old student at Christ Church, Oxford, will lead the party with his father Asif Ali Zardari. "I stand committed to the stability of the federation," Bilawal said in an extraordinary and emotional press conference following the meeting. Speaking in English, his voice rising to a youthful shout towards the end of his short initial statement, and fighting back tears, Bilawal told supporters, "My mother always said democracy is the best revenge."

Bilawal read his mother's will to a closed meeting of senior party officials on Sunday afternoon. The document, which Benazir wrote two days before she returned to Pakistan last October, after eight years of self-imposed exile, apparently called for Zardari to take the reigns of the party. But Bhutto's controversial husband says he wanted the family's political legacy to pass to his son, who he said would now be known as Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Party supporters immediately began chanting, "Long live Bilawal Bhutto."

A party aide says Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was injured in homicide attack and is undergoing surgery.

The bomber attacked Bhutto supporters as they were leaving a rally on Thursday and at least 20 people were feared dead, police and witnesses said.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw body parts and flesh scattered at the back gate of the Liaqat Bagh park in Rawalpindi where the rally was held. He counted about 20 bodies, including police, and could see many other wounded.

The road outside was stained with blood and people screamed for ambulances. Others gave water to the wounded lying in the street. The clothing of some of the victims was shredded and people put party flags over their bodies.

The bomb went off just minutes after Bhutto spoke to thousands of supporters and she appeared to be the target of the attack. Farahtullah Babar, the spokesman for her party, said her vehicle was about 50 yards away from blast which went off as she was leaving the rally venue.

"She had just crossed the gate when we heard a deafening sound. We could feel its impact but by the grace of God, she is safe," he said.

UPDATE: Bhutto is dead. It seems the assassination attempt was a success after all. America needs to re-assess its alliance with President Pervez Musharraf. How much easier could Musharraf make it for Islamic radicals to target her than to isolate her to one known location? I fear Bhutto will not survive until the February elections. Pakistani police placed opposition leader Benazir Bhutto under house arrest Friday, uncoiling barbed wire in front of her Islamabad home and reportedly rounding up 5,000 of her supporters to block a mass protest against emergency rule.

Bhutto tried twice to leave by car but was blocked by police after a scuffle with her supporters who tried to remove a barricade. The former prime minister had planned to address a rally in nearby Rawalpindi, defying a ban on public gatherings.

UPDATE: The house arrest order has been lifted:

Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been released from house arrest in the capital, Islamabad, officials say.

The order had blocked Ms Bhutto's bid to lead a rally against the emergency rule declared by President Musharraf.

The United States had criticised the house arrest, saying that she had to be "permitted freedom of movement".

Police swung batons and fired tear gas at supporters of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto demonstrating near Pakistan's parliament Wednesday, deepening a political crisis triggered by the imposition of military rule.

Associated Press reporters saw hundreds of protesters pushing metal barricades into ranks of riot police blocking their path. Police beat several activists who broke through, and dragged at least three away from the scene.

State television said the parliament had endorsed President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's state of emergency declaration.

The demonstrators pulled back after several rounds of tear gas were fired toward them.

Bhutto had called on supporters to defy a ban on protesting the imposition of emergency rule, even as the government threatened to crush her demonstrations.

She also said more than 400 members of her Pakistan People's Party have been arrested.

Musharraf, who took power in a 1999 coup, suspended the constitution after declaring the state of emergency Saturday. He has since ousted independent-minded judges, put a stranglehold on the media and granted sweeping powers to authorities to crush dissent. Thousands of people have been rounded up and thrown in jail since then.

Benazir Bhutto is accusing Islamic militants of using a child in last month's assassination attempt. Why does this not surprise me?

"They (terrorists) were trying to hoist the child -- dressed in the colours of my party's flag -- onto my truck," Bhutto said, adding failing to do so they dropped the child near her vehicle.

"Some witnesses said the child had been rigged as a human bomb. I can't be sure. What followed was a massive explosion, killing scores immediately, tearing many bodies in half and sending blood, gore and flames up into the vehicle," she said.

"In less than a minute a second bomb -- reports later suggested a car bomb -- went off," she wrote.

Bhutto survived unhurt when the blasts killing nearly 140 people took place near her armoured truck in a huge procession she led in Karachi after setting foot on Pakistani soil on October 18 for the first time in eight years.

KARACHI, Pakistan - The midnight suicide attack that killed at least 136 people and shattered the homecoming of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto may be the work of al-Qaida and the Taliban, authorities said Friday, as forensic experts studied the severed head of the alleged bomber to try to determine his identity.

The attack — one of the deadliest in Pakistan's history — bore the hallmarks of militants allied with pro-Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud and al-Qaida, according to Ghulam Muhammad Mohtarem, the top security official in Sindh province, where the attack took place. He suggested that Bhutto's camp had not seriously considered the need for security for her return after eight years in exile.

"We were already fearing a strike from Mehsud and his local affiliates and this was conveyed to (Bhutto's Pakistan's) People's Party but they got carried away by political exigencies instead of taking our concern seriously," Mohtarem said.

Bhutto's procession had been creeping toward the center of Karachi for 10 hours with supporters thronging her armored truck when a small explosion erupted near the front of the vehicle. That was quickly followed by a larger blast, destroying two police vans escorting the procession. Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao said the vehicles on the left side of Bhutto's truck had borne the brunt of the blast.
