While surfing around FaithFreedom.org and Rational Thinking, I came across this article about belief versus reality.

Reading the entire article will give you some sense about why it is so difficult to change irrational belief systems in some people. Keep these points in mind when challenging those who may embrace radical ideologies.

Skeptical thinkers must realize that because of the survival value of beliefs, disconfirming evidence will rarely, if ever, be sufficient to change beliefs, even in "otherwise intelligent" people. In order to effectively change beliefs skeptics must attend to their survival value, not just their data-accuracy value. This involves several elements.

First, skeptics must not expect beliefs to change simply as the result of data or assuming that people are stupid because their beliefs don't change. They must avoid becoming critical or demeaning in response to the resilience of beliefs. People are not necessarily idiots just because their beliefs don't yield to new information. Data is always necessary, but it is rarely sufficient.

Second, skeptics must learn to always discuss not just the specific topic addressed by the data, but also the implications that changing the related beliefs will have for the fundamental worldview and belief system of the affected individuals. Unfortunately, addressing belief systems is a much more complicated and daunting task than simply presenting contradictory evidence. Skeptics must discuss the meaning of their data in the face of the brain's need to maintain its belief system in order to maintain a sense of wholeness, consistency, and control in life. Skeptics must become adept at discussing issues of fundamental philosophies and the existential anxiety that is stirred up any time beliefs are challenged. The task is every bit as much philosophical and psychological as it is scientific and data-based.

Third, and perhaps most important, skeptics must always appreciate how hard it is for people to have their beliefs challenged. It is, quite literally, a threat to their brain's sense of survival. It is entirely normal for people to be defensive in such situations. The brain feels it is fighting for its life. It is unfortunate that this can produce behavior that is provocative, hostile, and even vicious, but it is understandable as well.

The lesson for skeptics is to understand that people are generally not intending to be mean, contrary, harsh, or stupid when they are challenged. It's a fight for survival. The only effective way to deal with this type of defensiveness is to de-escalate the fighting rather than inflame it. Becoming sarcastic or demeaning simply gives the other person's defenses a foothold to engage in a tit-for-tat exchange that justifies their feelings of being threatened ("Of course we fight the skeptics-look what uncaring, hostile jerks they are!") rather than a continued focus on the truth.

Skeptics will only win the war for rational beliefs by continuing, even in the face of defensive responses from others, to use behavior that is unfailingly dignified and tactful and that communicates respect and wisdom. For the data to speak loudly, skeptics must always refrain from screaming.

Finally, it should be comforting to all skeptics to remember that the truly amazing part of all of this is not that so few beliefs change or that people can be so irrational, but that anyone's beliefs ever change at all. Skeptics' ability to alter their own beliefs in response to data is a true gift; a unique, powerful, and precious ability. It is genuinely a "higher brain function" in that it goes against some of the most natural and fundamental biological urges. Skeptics must appreciate the power and, truly, the dangerousness that this ability bestows upon them. They have in their possession a skill that can be frightening, life-changing, and capable of inducing pain. In turning this ability on others it should be used carefully and wisely. Challenging beliefs must always be done with care and compassion.

Skeptics must remember to always keep their eye on the goal. They must see the long view. They must attempt to win the war for rational beliefs, not to engage in a fight to the death over any one particular battle with any one particular individual or any one particular belief. Not only must skeptics' methods and data be clean, direct, and unbiased, their demeanor and behavior must be as well.

'Meanest Mom On The Planet' Won't Allow Teen Son to Drink & Drive

Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."

After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone — by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.

The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.

Katrina Victim Wants $3 Gazillion-Billion For "Suffering"

...And sadly, our government is taking it seriously.

Hurricane Katrina's victims have put a price tag on their suffering and it is staggering — including one plaintiff seeking the unlikely sum of $3 quadrillion.

A whopping $3,014,170,389,176,410 is the dollar figure so far sought from some of the largest claims filed against the federal government over damage from the failure of levees and flood walls following the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.

Of roughly 489,000 total claims, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it has received 247 for at least $1 billion apiece, including the one for $3 quadrillion.

"That's the mother of all high numbers," said Loren Scott, a Baton Rouge-based economist.

For the sake of perspective: A mere $1 quadrillion would dwarf the U.S. gross domestic product, which Scott said was $13.2 trillion in 2007. A stack of one quadrillion pennies would reach Saturn.

Some residents may have grossly exaggerated their claims to send a message to the corps, which has accepted blame for poorly designing the failed levees.

WARSAW (Reuters) - A Polish man got the shock of his life when he visited a brothel and spotted his wife among the establishment's employees. Polish tabloid Super Express said the woman had been making some extra money on the side while telling her husband she worked at a store in a nearby town.

"I was dumfounded. I thought I was dreaming," the husband told the newspaper Wednesday.

The couple, married for 14 years, are now divorcing, the newspaper reported.

UK Muslim Man Beats Wife To Death; Family Did Nothing To Help Her

A teen bride was beaten by her new husband over a period of three weeks, ultimately resulting in her death. Adding to the horror of this tragic crime, the family members of the husband did nothing to stop the brutal attacks:

The victim's mother-in-law and a sister-in-law blamed her horrfic injuries, which included at least 15 fractures on 10 fractured ribs, on 'evil spirits, curses and black magic.' While two of the family allegedly lied under oath while giving evidence in husband Shazad Khan's murder trial in a deliberate attempt to help him cheat justice, the court heard.

Khan, 25, of Oakwood Grange, Leeds, was convicted of murdering his wife at Leeds Crown Court last January. After the trial police launched an investigation into the role of other family members sharing the house.

Detectives arrested and charged the victim's mother-in-law Phullan Bibi, 52, sisters-in-law Nazia Naureen, 28, sister-in-law Uzma Khan, 23, and her husband Majid Hussain, 28. All four denied a charge of allowing the death of a vulnerable adult. Khan and Hussain also denied a charge of perjury.

Summarising the prosecution case Simon Myerson, QC, said of the defendants: 'They did nothing. She was in severe pain, but not one of them did anything about it.'

Sabia grew up in the Pakistani region of Kashmir and arrived in the UK in December 2005 to marry her cousin Shazad Khan and live with his family in Leeds. Although they 'signed a marriage certificate' in Pakistan three years earlier, they were not formally married until a ceremony on 15 January 2006.

The teenage bride didn't speak English, knew no one else apart from her husband's family and never went out alone, the court heard.

Paramedics were called to the family home at 11.28 am on Sunday 21 May 2006 to find Sabia's fully-clothed and dead body in an upstairs bathroom. They claimed Sabia had been found dead in the bath, but the court heard she was 'probably killed in the garage' and her body taken upstairs.

Mr Myerson said Khan had inflicted a number of brutal attacks during the last three weeks of Sabia's life. The final attack which killed her was 'prolonged and vicious,' the court heard. Her agonising rib fractures were caused by 'kicks, stamps or very hard punches.'

Columbia University Professors & Deans To Apologize To Ahmadinejad

Weasel Zippers commented on this development by saying, "Excuse me while I go bang my fucking head off a wall..." My sentiments exactly.

An academic delegation of Columbia University professors and deans of faculties plans to visit Tehran to officially apologize to Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

The delegation plans to express regret for the insulting remarks Columbia University President Lee Bollinger directed at Ahmadinejad on September 24 in his introductory speech, the Mehr News Agency correspondent in New York reported.

Since the incident, the deans and professors from the faculties of history, anthropology, Middle Eastern studies, philosophy, and Islamic studies have criticized Bollinger’s behavior toward Ahmadinejad.

These professors and deans are obviously Islamic sympathizers who have no objections to the treatment of women and homosexuals in the Middle East. They should all be fired. It wasn't long ago that such egregious behavior would have amounted to treason.

I've been keeping readers updated on the events of Kosovo. Ethnic Albanians, i.e. Muslims, have so saturated parts of Serbia they are demanding the right to secede and dominate non-Muslims in the area.

Now, as Western allies protect and defend convicted Islamic terrorists, Muslims eye surrounding territories to expand Islamic state in southern Europe.

As it can be understood, the Albanian nationalists are mainly interested in creating a larger state by encompassing all Albanian minorities in the neighboring states. Inevitably that means conflicts across the Balkans for years to come, and it is puzzling how the international community is not interested enough to control the aims of the Albanians that first and foremost put in danger the European prospects of the whole of the region.

Just a few days ago, Nait Hasani member of PDK Presidency called towards the goal of a greater Albania. “First there should be supervised independence as proposed by Ahtisaari. But it is known that Kosovo and Albania citizens are one nation who want to live in one state," Hasani is quoted as having told a Polish paper. It is interesting to have a glance of the bio of this individual that proposes a blunt border change.

In 1997, Hasani was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder of 3 Serbs in Decani and an attempted murder of the Dean of the Pristina University Radivoje Popovic, an ethnic Serb. In 2002, Serbian government gave Hasani an amnesty for the killings. Hasani is quoted of saying that the amnesty was a result of the pressure exerted by the Albanian "allies the USA". Today, Hasani is a member of the Kosovo Albanian government.

This is how Islam intends to spread itself. Muslims will saturate one area and then slowly expand. Any resistance is met with the threat of violence or the open slaughter of non-Muslims. The Serbs, living in their own country, live in fear for their lives. The West is preventing Serbia from protecting its citizens, which it tried to do in the late 1990's.

Those who did not learn this lesson were to be extinct as were the Christians of North Arabia, Sinai, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Anatolia (Turkey), North Africa, Nubia, (North Sudan), as also the Zoroastrians of Iran, Baluchistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Buddhists of Afghanstan, Chinese Turkestan (Xinkiang), Kazakastan, the Hindus of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kashmir, the nature and idol worshipping Arabs of Saudi Arabia, and many other unnamed people who are extinct today and whose descendants survive as robots trapped in the mental prison of Islam.

The Serbs under Milosevic, only tried to reclaim what was historically originally theirs in the only way possible with the Muslim - with that of blood and death. The Muslims understand no other language. If humanity and our civilization are to be emancipated from the Muslim threat, then the only way out is to match and outmatch the Muslims at their gameplan, in their methods of war, in their cruelty, their pervasiveness, persistence, foresight, deception, subterfuge, hate for the adversary and all other departments of the war.

As passionate as I am about personal freedom, I don't buy the claims of anarchists that humanity would be just fine without any government at all. There are too many people in the world who believe that they know best how people should live their lives, and many of them are more than willing to use force to impose those beliefs on others. A world without government simply wouldn't last very long; as soon as it was established, strongmen would immediately spring up to establish their fiefdoms. So there is a need for government to protect the people's rights. And one of the fundamental tools to do that is an army that can prevent outside agencies from imposing their rules on a society. A lot of people will protest that argument by noting that the people we are fighting in Iraq are unlikely to threaten the rights of the average American. That's certainly true; while our enemies would certainly like to wreak great levels of havoc on our society, the fact is they're not likely to succeed. But that doesn't mean there isn't still a need for an army (setting aside debates regarding whether ours is the right size at the moment). Americans are fortunate that we don't have to worry too much about people coming to try and overthrow us, but part of the reason we don't have to worry about that is because we have an army that is stopping anyone who would try.

Which Freedoms Are Expendable?

How many thing in the list below are you will to surrender in order to placate Muslims? If you say not many, then you should already be fighting.

The intent of the list is to illustrate the futility of the multicultural approach to Islam. Sharia law demands submission not only from Muslims, but from non-Muslims as well. This makes respectful coexistence nearly impossible with Muslims in Infidel lands. The examples below serve as reminder that submitting to one complaint or another only emboldens Muslims to seek to further their ultimate goal of establishing sharia.

The West needs to come to grips with this fact and start standing up for our God-given rights of free speech, free expression and freedom of religion, lest we surrender those rights to a theocratic movement bent on removing our Constitutional freedoms that we hold dear. In this case, our tolerance will lead to intolerance.

Most people would have tossed the poster aside without a second thought. Muslims cry to the police because they feel insulted. They cry out to stir up tensions, and then they'll complain about the Islamophobic hostilities...

Members of the Somali community in Lewiston say a poster put up in front of a local Somali owned store is an insult to their religion.

The poster depicts a vicious "lost" dog named Mohammed. That's the name of the Muslim prophet. It says that the dog is not good with children and can't be trusted.

Hussein Ahmed, the owner of the store, says the phone number on the poster is fake and that the only place it was put up was right near his business.

"This is really a religious statement," said Hussein Ahmed, "that is an attack on our religion which we don't feel comfortable with. We see this as a very bad insulting situation."

The owner of the store checked the number? I have no doubts, Ahmed was only going to inquire how he could help this person locate their beloved pet. It was only upon finding out the number was fake did he decide to contact authorities.

I don't understand what the hubbub is... A rabid dog, not good with kids, can't be trusted... At what point did truth become offensive?

In establishing the Sharia, the first logical step would be to silence the opposition with threats of violence and/or imprisonment. I was reading the comments section on JihadWatch concerning a story about how Pentagon specialist on Islamic law & extremism, Stephen Coughlin, was fired after pro-Islamic officals complained about him. Albanian Muslims Threaten Violence If Demands Are Not Met

Muslims throughout the world have discovered violence, and the threat of violence, is the easiest, most effective way to achieve their goals. Non-Muslims are quick to appease for the sake of peace. Only that may lead to their own destruction.

Eight houses owned by Serbs have been attacked in Kosovo on the first day in the New Year, reports FoNet news agency.

Kosovo and Metohija Coordinating Center says that the attacks have been synchronized and focused on a Serbian enclave of Kosovska Mitrovica in northern Kosovo.

One Serb house was set on fire and seven others were stoned. A home owned by Radovan Lazic was set ablaze just after the arrival of the New Year. The house is no longer usable.

Kosovo Serbs are habitually targeted by the Albanian Muslim extremists across the Kosovo province. Later in the New Year day, a Serb bank was blown up in a bombing attack in Kosovo.

Kosovo is a Serbian province, administered by UN since 1999, where Muslim Albanians are a majority by ethnically and religiously cleansing the Christians out of a province in order to make an ethnically and religiously pure Muslim Albanian state. Separatist Muslims have warned repeatedly that they will turn to violence if they do not get independence.

Honor Killings In America

This would be shocking if committed by any other than the religion of peace. Sadly, it has become expected when involving Muslims.

Police provided no clues about the motive for the killings. "There are several things we're looking into," said Irving police Officer David Tull, noting that the suspect faces capital murder charges.

Officer Tull said there have been some "domestic issues" with the family, but he did not elaborate.

Police did say they are looking into the possibility that the father was upset with his daughters' dating activities.

Bomb Rocks Serbian Bank in Kosovo

A bomb exploded at the offices of a Serb bank in the south of Serbia's breakaway province of Kosovo late on Tuesday, causing considerable damage but no injuries, police said.

The blast targeted a branch of the Komercijalna Banka in the town of Dragas, an ethnically mixed region in the southern tip of the Albanian majority province.

Kosovo has been run by the United Nations since NATO bombs drove out Serb forces in 1999, but tensions are rising as the 90-percent Albanian majority nears an expected declaration of independence in the first months of 2008.

What Reuters isn't saying is that the "Albanians" are Muslims. Leave it to the 'religion of peace' to bomb minority businesses as a fear tactic. Another thing - further in the article it says, "Serbia lost control over Kosovo in 1999 after NATO powers intervened to halt the killing and ethnic cleansing of Albanians in a two-year Serb counter-insurgency war." The suggestion is that the Albanians are the oppressed innocents targeted by Serbians. In fact, the Serbs were victimized by Muslim Albanians for centuries until the Kosovo Serbs decided to fight back.

It took a while before the AP decided to acknowledge the perpetrators were Muslim. Such horrendous brutality can only come from the Religion of Peace.

In broad daylight, a crowd of Kenyans set a church filled with hundreds of terrified families on fire and listened to them scream as flames engulfed them, according to witnesses including police and a Red Cross volunteer.

Those who escaped the building were hunted down with machetes; others hid inside pit latrines.

Up to 50 people were killed in the attack, said a Red Cross official who asked that her name — which would identify her tribe — not be published to protect her from reprisals. Even first aid workers were stopped by vigilante gangs who demanded their identity.

The attack Tuesday was the ugliest incident yet since last week's disputed elections unleashed a torrent of ethnic and political violence that has claimed at least 270 lives.

Those massacred in the church were mostly Kikuyus, Kenya's largest ethnic group and the one to which President Mwai Kibaki belongs. Kenya's other 41 official tribes accuse them of monopolizing political power and businesses at the expense of other tribes — accusations stridently taken up by supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga, a Luo.

Muslims Condemn Serbia For Defending Itself

Serbia doesn't want to surrender to IslamoFascist demands. That makes Serbia an aggressor (and an enemy of Islam) to ethnic Albanians, who want to secede and establish their own Islamic state where they can dominate non-Muslims as ordered in the Qur'an.

PRISTINA, Serbia-Kosovo's president accused Serbia on Thursday of "aggression" for passing a resolution condemning any attempt by the breakaway province to declare independence.

On Wednesday, lawmakers in Serbia approved a resolution calling on the country to "reconsider" diplomatic ties with any Western countries that recognize Kosovo as independent.

The resolution also rejected the idea of an EU mission in Kosovo before the province's status is resolved, and denounced NATO for allegedly supporting separatist Kosovo Albanians.

In Pristina Thursday, Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu called the move "unjust and baseless, in line with other constitutional aggressions" by Belgrade.

Kosovo's ethnic Albanians, who account for about 90 percent of Kosovo's 2 million people, want to secede from Serbia.

But Serbia insists Kosovo, considered the cradle of Serbia's medieval state and religion, should remain part of its territory.
